Presents For Sally

Let it be said that Presents For Sally is a real gift. A gift that will stay close to your heart and ears for many, many years to come. A real gem amongst the many flash in the pans clamoring for your listening attention.

Presents For Sally are husband and wife team Matt and Anna Etherton, joined by drummer Luke Feierabend who also sorts out effects and other accompanying noises. Located just outside the seaport city of Bristol, England, you will often find them playing and carousing in town, often with Bristol’s The Fauns.

Though Matt is originally from Maidstone, Kent, he eventually moved to Glastonbury where he met Anna. Anna had decided that she wanted to establish a band so she put an ad up in a local Glastonbury record shop seeking a guitarist. Matt got the gig and the band was called Tilted Exposure which sounded more like an early Hole and PJ Harvey hybrid. As time went along, Anna and Matt worked on their own musical ideas and demos, one of which was to become their debut single, “Catch Your Fall” which was one of their works that got them recognition to a niche of Shoegazers around the world.

Presents For Sally - "Catch Your Fall" 7" vinyl

We were also gifted with Presents For Sally when they released a track on the 2008 compilation The Secret Garden Vol 1: (Nu-gaze: The New Wave of Shoegaze) which was released on Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records label. Yes, folks, Geoff Barrow from the renowned Bristol Trip-Hop innovators, Portishead. Their track “Flowers Falling Sideways” was one of the highlights of the album which is very reminiscent of the sweet blissful drones of those other great British Shoegazers, Air Formation. You will find them nestled snuggly amongst other such Nu-Gaze favorites as Thought Forms , 93MillionMilesFromTheSun, Rumskib, Malory, Kyte, Soundpool, Fleeting Joys, The Fauns, Butterfly Explosion, Orange Yellow Red, Amusement Parks On Fire and Ulrich Schnauss. A collection that helped to make all of these names familiar to the world of Nu-Gaze.

Presents For Sally - "A Touch Of Joy, A Touch Of Sadness"

Along the way, there were a series of live appearances, the official 7″ vinyl single release of “Catch Your Fall” backed with “Smooch”, lots of thoughtful and careful writing, recording and mixing. Eventually, November 2010 brought us the release of Presents For Sally’s debut full length album, A Touch Of Joy, A Touch Of Sadness on Michael Savage’s of The Fauns Laserghost Records.

Having made an impression within the Shoegaze community, don’t be fooled by thinking that this is the only sound the band chooses to work with. Between the three of them, they bring a whole host of interests and influences which can be heard in their various selections throughout the album. Bits and pieces of Grunge, Shoegaze, Madchester, Hip Hop, Punk and Post Rock can all be found throughout the disc yet in a very complementary and cohesive manner which proves to us that Presents For Sally have their own unique sound they can proudly call their own.

It’s not just the music that has garnered the attention of many but also their gorgeous bright and colorful cover art which is bound to catch the eye of anyone strolling through the aisles of their local record shops or online vendors. The kind you intentionally place in the front of your own collection just to decorate your humblest of abodes. Credit goes to Anna for the arrangement and designs and Luke took the photographs. The beautiful candy colors reveal the playful innocence and lush washes of what you will hear inside.

Hoping to be an active part of the upcoming Record Store Day this April, Presents For Sally are putting their efforts together to release a one off single. Time and funds are of the essence so we shall have to see. A couple years ago the band released a CD single for the event and appreciated being able to be a part of the whole experience.

Other possibilities in the works; again, depending mostly on funds; is a 7″ vinyl release featuring one of the 7 or 8 new tracks they’ve got stashed away and hopefully a 12″ EP of the title song from “A Touch Of Joy, A Touch Of Sadness” with 3 of their newer tracks.

On the tour front, Presents For Sally are in the process of rehearsing live shows and hoping to broaden their reach. Wanting to fill out their sound, they are looking to expand to a full band. This will allow them to abandon some of the backing tracks they’ve previously used for live shows and reserving them for cool beefed up effects such as backwards guitars and various washes. Depending less on backing tracks, they expect their live performances to have a much rawer sound. They also plan to have more input from the entire band with writing for the new album. Could we hear a whole new sound from Presents For Sally? You’ll just have to stay tuned to Air Atlantic Underground Radio and stay current with the band to find out.

The Air Atlantic Underground

A bit late but, as they say, better late than never. Of course, with the website still in it’s infancy, it’s forgivable.

The following is a list of Air Atlantic Underground Radio’s Best Releases of 2010.

They are in no particular order nor are they necessarily all 2010 releases. Instead, they are what Air Atlantic Underground Radio considers the best newer releases for the 2010 listening year.

You have no idea how much I hate making these lists. How do I remember everything for a whole year? Which do the station’s listeners and I like the best? What is my mood at the time and how it affects my thoughts on what I’m listening to at any given moment? Was it released in the US this year and last in the UK? Screw it! (Guess you can tell that High Fidelity isn’t high on my list of Favorite Movies.) I probably forgot some very good releases and I do apologize in advance. Please feel free to add comments below on your favorites for 2010.

Do be aware that I’m saving a release or two for next year that were technically released in 2010. The kind of stuff that squeezed out just before the year changed over but gets most of its play the following year. (A certain shiny band comes to mind and has already been logged on 2011’s list.)

A big THANK YOU to the following bands for helping Air Atlantic Underground Radio gaze, drone, shimmer and rock throughout 2010 and into the future.

Youngteam

Maybe there is something in the water. Maybe it’s all of those long, cold winter nights. Maybe it’s the etheric splendor of the flashing light parade of the aurora borealis. Whatever it is, there must be something in Stockholm, Sweden that has Youngteam devoting so much talent and time thinking about, writing about and playing about dreaming. Lost in a world of thought, Youngteam have decided to so aptly name their latest release Daydreamer.

Daydreamer, due out for official release in March of 2011 on Northern Star Records, is a delightful and ethereal mesmerizing exploration along a cerebral landscape of lush jangly guitars awash in reverb set to an array of harmonious melodies and enchanting rhythms. Every track, from beginning to end, are well placed, with one song as good as the next. Daydreamer will send you on your own sonic daydreams replete with all of the effects laden soundscapes of your dreams. As the band’s debut full length, it is amazing to discover that most of these tracks were recorded from live shows, thanks to the expert production skills of Mattias Glava. Mattias Glava is a top Swedish producer better know for his work with Dungen, Håkan Hellström and The Soundtrack of Our Lives.

Youngteam are; depending on whenever you catch them as they’ve had a number of personnel changes; Fredrik Liljequist, Peter Eriksson, Johan Angantyr, Mattias Hägerstrand (helping hands from time to time), Christian Rockström, Jesper Klein, Tobias Eidewald, Andrev Bergström, Matilda Johansson, Matilda Niang and Anna Järvinen.

When Youngteam put out their first release in 2007 as an EP called Missnobandjet, they chose to work as a collective and feature different lead singers. One of them was the much acclaimed Anna Järvinen who took to the mic for the often favored “Your Love”. Previously, Anna had established a bit of a reputation for her contributions with Granada and Dungen. Since her work with Youngteam, Anna Järvinen, on her own, went on to achieve a top ten album in Finland and Sweden.

As a special treat for the listeners of Air Atlantic Underground Radio, Youngteam and Scott Causer, owner of Northern Star Records, have allowed us an exclusive free download of an unreleased demo copy of “Your Love”, featuring Anna Järvine.

Don’t forget to tune into Scott’s radio show called Revolution In Sound which airs on Wednesdays and Fridays on Air Atlantic Underground Radio. Check our Broadcast Schedule page for air times. And, by all means, don’t forget to pre-order your copy of Daydreamer by Youngteam at the Northern Star Records online shop. It’s a real stunner!

Upside Down the Movie from Upside Down The Movie on Vimeo.

Back in the day there was a new class of music lovers who, yet again, had a need to move on from what had become the established worlds of Punk Rock, Goth, Synth Pop and the Neu Romantics movement. Not that they so much wanted to rid themselves of their idols but, instead, wanted to grow and explore other artistic directions. After all, that’s what often drives the artistic temperament. With them were the kids who had just come of age who had grown up wanting to be those idols. They too brought their take to what was to become a whole new scene that would take hold; only for some of them to be pushed into dormancy for about a decade until the time was right to resprout itself and blossom again; as the scene that celebrates itself.

Upside Down: the Creation Records Story is a documentary that truly celebrates itself. The filmmaker, Danny O’Connor, tells the tale of one of the penultimate records labels of the time, Alan McGee’s Creation Records. Creation Records helped to launch the careers of such notables as Ride, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Telescopes, Oasis, Primal Scream, Swervedriver, The House Of Love and, for better or worse, My Bloody Valentine. For what it’s worth, Creation Records wasn’t just a record label but a whole new scene that celebrated music and their creators and continued the excesses of the Rock and Roll lifestyle that all too often proved to be the undoing of more than a few, including Mr. McGee himself. You could say that sometimes, just a little too much celebrating. Along the way, as does often happen in the biz, there were also a few bad business moves and others not keeping up their end of expensive deals. Yes, I’m pointing a finger at you, Mr. Kevin Shields, the King of d.e..l…a….y, you wonderful bloody noise maker, you! Even without the next My Bloody Valentine record, Oasis alone may have carried the label on if it weren’t for Alan’s own demons.

Enough! Get the rest of the story complete with a soundtrack by some of the Creation Records bands, including an additional new film score created by none other than Ride’s Mark Gardener. Plenty of live clips amongst a massive swirling soundtrack, interviews from behind the scenes and recollections in hindsight from the scene makers so many of us are still celebrating.

Currently, Upside Down: the Creation Records Story is viewing at a number of film festivals around the world before it has it’s official DVD release on May 9th, 2011. If you are lucky enough to be in any of these areas at the time, you can catch a viewing on the big screen. Check out the schedule for dates and locations.

And, of course, any good music documentary will come accompanied with its own soundtrack for your personal listening pleasure. The official digital soundtrack is already available at the film’s website. The track listing below serves as a nice teaser to get us ready for what they have in store for us to celebrate.

1. Oasis – Rock ‘n’ Roll Star
2. The Jesus and Mary Chain – Upside Down
3. Primal Scream – Loaded
4. Ride – Leave Them All Behind
5. The Loft – Up the Hill and Down the Slope
6. Sugar – If I Can’t Change Your Mind
7. The House of Love – Destroy The Heart
8. Super Furry Animals – Something 4 the Weekend
9. Teenage Fanclub – The Concept
10. Swervedriver – Duel
11. BMX Bandits – Serious Drugs
12. The Boo Radleys – Wake Up Boo

Daniel Land

If you are out and about in the land up north, you may well run into quite a sociable character named Daniel Land. Daniel; Danny or Dan to his many friends; is making a mark for himself as one of the areas’ prominent musicians. Besides being a musician, Daniel has even had the pleasure to host a very small concert by Jane Siberry right in his very own living room! Though Daniel is originally from way down south in Exeter, Devon; that land up north that he now calls home is Manchester, England.

As if you haven’t figured it out already, Daniel is the main man who fronts the band, Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. The other members of the band are Graeme Meikle, Oisin Scarlett, Andrew Galpin and Jason Magee.

When The Painters aren’t around, Daniel spends some of his time with a much more Ambient personal project he calls Riverrun on Saint Cecilia Records. Imagine relaxing by the side of a babbling brook on a warm and sunny day with nothing to do but watch the grass grow and the frogs jump about. That’s the sort of soothing feeling you get while listening to the gentle Ambient tones and rhythms of Riverrun. Oh, did I just say that listening to Riverrun was like watching grass grow!? Oh, my! Believe me, it’s all good and just what the doctor ordered to relax all those tethered nerves from all of the manic frustrations of everyday life. Don’t believe me? Give it a good spin and feel your stress wash away into the ether. Think Brian Eno when he decided to chill out a bit and create all that wonderful Ambient background music, ala his Music For Airports series. Daniel’s admiration for one of his mentors is quite evident with his Riverrun project. You can find Riverrun’s Pentimento at Daniel Land’s Big Cartel shop along with several releases from Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. There is also a very limited 2nd album on it’s way at this very moment called La Mer, again on Saint Cecelia Records. Finally, for Riverrun’s devoted fans, there’s also a digital single release of “Hamworthy Common (Parts I & II)” distributed as a free download on the BFW Recordings website.

Daniel Land puts his guitar down and goes to it on synth

Daniel Land & The Modern Painters’ first release was an EP in 2007 they called Voss. From my understanding, it’s long sold out but you can still purchase a digital copy from CD Baby. In 2008, it was followed up with another EP called Imagining October which was later rereleased to satisfy further demand. The Sonic Cathedral label released the band’s 7″ vinyl single of “Within The Boundaries” (Schnauss/Peters Mix), originally from the Voss EP, backed with “Benjamin’s Room” (Schnauss/Peters Mix). Next they came along in 2009 with what is considered the band’s debut full length album, Love Songs For The Chemical Generation, a glorious journey through the enchanted land of Daniel Land & The Modern Painters. Yet another sold out item*. Are you sensing a trend here? Never fear! You can purchase a digital copy at the band’s Bandcamp shop.

* (Editing Note: Just got word that there are still a few copies of Love Songs For The Chemical Generation left at the band’s Big Cartel shop. Get them now before they too are sold out!)

A busy man, that Daniel! He’s also a contributor to a local band called The Steals among other projects that he’s involved in. Too many, I suspect, for even he to keep track of!

But wait, there’s more. When the up and coming critically acclaimed Engineers went through a shake up and needed to replace two of it’s members, Daniel Land stepped up to the plate with his trusty bass guitar to help beef up the band after Mark Peters moved over to take the lead on guitar. Still in need of another member, Ulrich Schnauss was right by his side ready to fill in with his magical keyboard and technical skills. Here, at the time, we fans feared that Engineers were breaking up. Little did we know what they had up their musical sleeves to tantalize the masses. You can hear Daniel’s contributions on the Engineers latest 2010 album on Kscope Records called In Praise Of More.

All of this, combined with all of the touring that he does with his various musical endeavors, leads me to one conclusion: Daniel never sleeps. He can’t. How would he ever find the time? Truly one of this generation’s musical wonders.

Hinterland

Back in 2003 up in Vancouver, Canada, a band called Hinterland released their debut album, Under The Waterline on Detroit’s HybridElectric Records. Under The Waterline is full of soft yet powerful musical explorations in the world of Ethereal Dream that became part of the resurgence of the Shoegaze movement.

Hinterland consisted of John Lucas, Michaela Galloway, Robb Johannes and Gregg Steffensen and went on to create 2 more releases before their eventual demise. Lead guitarist John Lucas and chanteuse Michaela Galloway married and added a son to their lives making things a bit difficult for them to bother with all of the touring and area live shows that Hinterland diligently performed for their area fans; not to mention finding time to write, rehearse and record outside of a busy new household. By the way, we hear that little Master Lucas has taken to following in his mother’s footsteps; albeit, in his own preferred styling.

With music being in their blood, John and Michaela found ways to continue creating the music they both love so dearly as well as holding together their new lives as a family. It’s called DIY, folks and you do it at home. Together, they call themselves The Hope Slide.

The Hope Slide, along with the follow up releases from Hinterland, can be found on John Lucas’ Submerged Records label. Hinterland’s second album was released in 2006 with the title The Picture Plane. Finally in 2008, Hinterland put out their last album under the name Pan Pan Medico. Of course, cuts from each of these albums have found their way on Air Atlantic Underground Radio at some time over the years and still manage to grace its airwaves.

By the way, if you go to The Hope Slide’s Bandcamp profile, you can find lots of really cool remixes of their self-titled 2010 release for free in the digital format of your choice. Well worth the download!

To celebrate the inception of Hinterland and it’s time with us, the band has decided to offer up the track “Tiger Tiger” from Under The Waterline as a free download. In my opinion, their best song, full of gentle beauty and powerful submissive emotions.

Should Are Back!

Should are a dreamy Shoegaze band that formed about a decade ago in Austin, Texas. They originally started out in 1995 under the name shiFt and had 2 releases. ShiFt released the original CD-EP of A Folding Sieve in 1995, followed up in 1997 by a 7″ vinyl release called Own Two Feet.

After a decided name change, Should released their debut CD in 1998 called Feed Like Fishes. Late, in 2002, they released a follow-up called A Folding Sieve. To this day, both are well respected amongst the old Slowcore and newer Shoegaze aficianados.

As often happens, life goes on and gets in the way causing bands to break up and move on to other pursuits such as careers and other of life’s holdings. Life brought Marc Ostermeier to Baltimore, Maryland where he is currently a professor at the distinguished Johns Hopkins University. Eric Ostermeier, Marc’s brother, lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he is a political blogger as well as a researcher at the University of Minnesota. Not to be out done, Tanya Maus also spends much of her time within the halls of higher learning and is a professor in Ohio at Wittenberg University. Quite a brainy bunch! And here ya’ll thought they just made beautiful music together. With the geographical distances between them, it’s not the most conducive for an impromptu band rehearsal. Somehow, they’ve managed to close the gap and come up with a real beauty of a new, long awaited album called Like A Fire Without Sound. The album has been completed and the official release is set for April of 2011.

Though distance kept Should from continuing on their joint musical production for some time, that didn’t cause Marc Ostermeier to bury his ax. Marc has 2 solo Ambient/Experimental releases under his belt which allowed him to explore new musical territory from the more Dream induced Shoegaze as what we are familiar with from Should. Chance Reconstruction and Lakefront can be found on iTunes and at the Should Shop on the Minneapolis based Words On Music Records label website, along with Should’s other fine releases.

All one has to do is listen to Should’s new tracks, “Glass House” and “Turned Tables” to hear that nothing was lost over time. Should sound as dreamy as ever and, in fact, display a maturation in sound that will put any self-respecting Shoegazer into the most dream induced of states.

For the time being, Should have been kind enough to allow us to share and download 2 very promising tracks from their new release, Like A Fire Without Sound, due out in April of 2011 on the Words On Music label.

The Stargazer Lilies

Yet another love child of that stargazing starstruck couple from the rolling hills of the Poconos, John Ceparano and Kim Field. John and Kim are much more known for their main project Soundpool, one of the premier New York City bands of the new millennium that helped to revive the current Shoegaze movement.

The Stargazer Lilies add a deeper and more droneful sensibility to the couple’s usually Synth and dreamy Dance creations that Soundpool have perfected. They refer to it as Discogaze. The Stargazer Lilies drone on with whispery vocals and it’s full of all the joy that any Shoegazer could want.
