The Telewire - Stephen Thurman

A number of years ago, there was an Industrial project around called Self Contained Unit which was full of all the heavy beats, distorted vocals and loud, fast noise one would expect. This Industrial endeavor went on for about a year or two until it was time to morph into yet another sound. If you look hard enough, you may still find a cassette that was put out. Self Contained Unit was a one man powerhouse by the Austin native, Stephen Thurman.

As time progressed and interests changed, Stephen realized that his heart just wasn’t into such hyped up hard edged music anymore. There just wasn’t enough anger deep with inside of him and he found himself playing music that was softer instrumental and more Electronic based. Keeping the same name, Self Contained Unit, Stephen started playing a few live shows and released a couple CD-Rs.

Progressing along, one day Stephen decided to pick up that guitar he kept off on the side and discovered that he had a dearth of new music flowing from within. These songs were slower and spacier and seemed to take on a life of their own. The Telewire all started with the birth of a song called “Quiet Satellite”. Yet another side took hold to take Stephen into new musical dimensions of sound.

As with his previous projects, The Telewire is a one man, full bodied, band of sorts completely performed by Stephen Thurman. All parts, from guitar to drums to vocals and bass, are performed by Stephen.

Unfortunately, due to the one man does it all approach, we are unlikely to ever see The Telewire play live. Then again, maybe, just maybe, one day Stephen will figure out an acceptable way of using DATs to enhance his singing and guitar playing as a one man live act. Or, possibly, find another musician or so to help fill out his live sound. It can happen though no plans of such at the moment.

With all the talk of The Telewire being a solo project, you would never know it to listen to the album. It sounds quite full as though there was a roomful of musicians pumping out the sounds.

Stephen is a graphic artist by trade so expect more visual pairings down the line. There are plans to produce some music videos for The Telewire and Stephen has already printed up a few t-shirts for the band. Expect they will be available on the forthcoming website which is in the works.

Oh, while the wires are hot, so to speak, Stephen is already writing new music for the next release by The Telewire. The newer music, again, will be a solo project, and may be even more Electronic. Stephen aptly describes The Telewire’s current music as being Indie, Space Rock and Shoegaze; all of which I can agree with. Keep your eyes and ears open for The Telewire because there’s a lot of good stuff for you to enjoy.

Falling For The Sky Drops

Wilmington, Delaware is home to a charming dreamy couple of Shoegazers who call themselves
The Sky Drops. The Sky Drops are Rob Montejo and Monika Bullette. You may remember Rob from the area’s former Shoegaze band who had made a name for themselves worldwide, Smashing Orange. Smashing Orange are no more and Rob has teamed up with Monika to carry on his own blend of dreamy laced Shoegaze with a side of grungy rock for a bit of a kick. Monika has previously sang and played drums for the bands Nero and Licorice Roots. Between the two, you’ll find that they make all of the noise that’s needed. Monika plays drums and sings while Rob does his thing on guitar and vocals.

The following is a video of their song “Hang On” from the band’s debut EP, Clouds Of People.

The Sky Drops put out their first release in 2006 with an EP called Clouds Of People on Fridabear Records. The EP was strong enough to garner them worldwide attention and praise. Eventually, The Sky Drops put out a full length album in August of 2009 called Bourgeois Beat again earning them respect amongst the Dream and Shoegaze set around the world.

Set for a March 29, 2011 release is a new EP called Making Mountains which will be released on Custom Made Music. This will be released as a beautiful 12″ LP with a gorgeous silk screened cover. The album is limited to 100 copies, each being hand numbered. It will only be available either at their live shows or through Custom Made Music. Cut It Up With Bloody Knives

A few years ago, back in Austin, Texas, two men under the guise of The Joy Bus were creating their own brand of electronic post-rock music of sorts. Then something happened and that Joy Bus turned the corner and became Bloody Knives. As unfortunate of an accident that may sound like, that idea couldn’t be further from the truth.

Preston Maddox and Jake McCown describe Bloody Knives as being Industrial Shoegaze or Psychedelic Punk. Take your pick since, when it comes down to it, it depends on which track you are listening to at the time. Each description fits and melds together to form a cohesive mix of musical concepts. One minute you may find yourself drifting off into a serene Ambient sleep only to be yanked out of your blissful dream state the next to jump up and cut a rug with a much harder edgier sound with Bloody Knives.

Starting off as a two man outfit with Preston Maddox on bass, voice, keyboards, samples and programming duties and Jake McCown handling drums, noise, programming and art, the band later brought Jim Moon into the fold as the band’s sound manipulator.

Bloody Knives: An Introduction

In October of 2009, Bloody Knives released their debut self-titled EP. The band then followed the EP up in July of 2010 with a full release called Burn It All Down which was produced by Josh Pursur and Bloody Knives and mastered by Kramer. No fooling around here! This is serious stuff. January of 2011 then brought us a split single between Bloody Knives and Me You Us Them.

Wanting more hands on action, Bloody Knives also run their own record label called KillRedRocket Records. Unlike most record labels, KillRedRocket Records is much more about celebrating and sharing good music than making a profit, though they would be more than happy to sell you plenty of music, t-shirts and posters to keep your music loving heart’s content via the website’s online store. As a means of promotion, there is also a whole bucket full of great music that you can download for free in compilation form which includes other great bands from around the world such as Stellarium, Between The Cities Are Stars, The Rosen Association and PinkShinyUltraBlast. Plan to have your ears loaded with all kinds of new sounds to warm your noise loving hearts.

Ceremony Release New EP: Not Tonight

Those boys from Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Capital of Drone, have done it again. Ceremony have just completed a new EP called Not Tonight on the Custom Made Music label. Not Tonight is set for release on March 29, 2011.

Ceremony are Paul Baker and John Fedowitz. Both share duties on guitar, bass, vocals, drum machines and any other synthetic noise maker they can get their hands on. Paul and John were also two thirds of the highly revered band Skywave along with Oliver Ackermann, now the lead man for A Place To Bury Strangers. When Ollie moved to NYC, Paul and John stuck it out going their own direction, along with a name change to Ceremony. In case you were wondering, yes, that is their little nod to one of their mentors, Joy Division.

Being a two man outfit, you could easily falsely assume that Ceremony would have a smallish sound. You would be greatly mistaken. The guys deliver a big sound with all the drone, bliss and punch you would expect from much larger bands. Their trademark sound is a very deep and powerful one. A sound that pays just as much attention to its melodies and song structures as it does to all that fuzzy drone that all the Shoegazers love them for. All in all, the total package makes each song a fully satisfying experience.

Making Noise With //orangenoise

//orangenoise plays live in Karachi, Pakistan

“Orange noise”

“Orange noise is quasi-stationary noise with a finite power spectrum with a finite number of small bands of zero energy dispersed throughout a continuous spectrum. These bands of zero energy are centered about the frequencies of musical notes in whatever scale is of interest. Since all in-tune musical notes are eliminated, the remaining spectrum could be said to consist of sour, citrus, or “orange” notes.[12]” [Wikipedia]

Hmm…. I like orange. I like citrus. I like to listen to the noise between the notes. Maybe that’s why I like //orangenoise. It shimmers, it shines, it rocks and it’s undefined.

Like their namesake, //orangenoise does not completely cling to any one genre or sound of music. That’s probably due to the various influences that each member of the band brings with them which has them continually wading between sounds that could at any given time be defined anywhere between Psychedelic to Shoegaze to Blues to Hard Rock. It’s not so much that they try to be any of these. They just share with each other what comes to them and allow the music to take them where it may, or creating what they call //orangenoise.

The members of //orangenoise are Talha Asim Wynne on guitar and vocals, Faizan Reidinger on guitar, Daniel Arthur Panjwaneey on bass and vocals and Danial Hyatt on percussion.

Talha had already made a name for himself amongst a small niche of Shoegazers across the webb with his solo work. Also, he and Daniel Panjwaneey had become favorites amongst the Indus Valley School of Art scene in Karachi, Pakistan which Talha had been attending at the time. They played together in a band called Look Busy Do Nothing.

Faizan and Danial (Hyatt) were part of another accomplished area band called Mole. After playing a Radiohead tribute show, a few of them moved their own private little gig to one of their homes where a jam session got underway. On several other occasions, Daniel Panjwaneey joined Mole to play bass for a few of their shows. But it wasn’t until the four found themselves jamming on the rooftops of Karachi that they decided that they should do something about all of this //orangenoise and get down to some serious business.

As it was, //orangenoise, stemming from a series of jam sessions between friends, originally started out as a collective. Once the ball got rolling and they refined their sound, they settled on the four members and got themselves some bookings. Their first show was in July of 2010 and was held at a very popular venue in Karachi, the Pakistan American Cultural Center. This was an exciting offer for the band because the majority of the bands play in small cafes across Karachi which are now popping up everywhere. About 80% of the local bands play covers of mostly Classic Rock such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd songs but there are some originals in the mix. //orangenoise is one of those originals who write and play their own music.

Rock Back For The Japan Disaster Relief Fund

Tom Lugo: The Man Whose Heart Sings Love

Many of you are already familiar with a very special man in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania named Tom Lugo. A man with the biggest heart in the world. Tom is the leading force behind the band Stellarscope and the owner of Patetico Recordings. He is also the man behind a number of music festivals, such as the Pop Noise Fest, in Philadelphia and Puerto Rico.

When times are tough, Tom is always the first to step up to the plate to contribute what he can in the ways that he does best.

As Japan continues to rumble, Tom has already devised a way to help collect a few funds to aid in the relief for the many victims of this tragedy. A series of compilations are underway to help aid the Japan Disaster Relief Fund. Though enough material has already been collected for a couple compilations, Tom is already considering a 3rd, and maybe even a 4th, to add to the collection.

There are three ways that you may be able to help.

1.) If you are a musician, you can submit a track for consideration for one of the later compilations. Make sure you select something good and not that piece of crap you can’t use because your singer smoked himself silly the night before and the guitar player had to resort to old worn out rusty strings because there weren’t any others left after breaking the last E and G strings anywhere near the studio. Besides, it was a crappy song anyway that really had no direction.

I’ve seen a few names of some who have already contributed a song and it promises to be a must for your collections. Some names that you will be proud to share some digital space with including a few rare tracks.

Remember, this will help to get you heard by an audience who may have never heard of you before. Also, if selected, you will be placed amongst others who have something worth hearing. Let the world hear you too are worth a listen.

2.) Once the compilations are released, buy yourself at least one copy of each compilation. By ‘buy a copy’, I mean actually spend a little money on a real copy, be it a hard copy issued CD or, if you prefer, a digital copy. I do not mean download a pirate copy that will give you the music but not do a thing to send aid to Japan. Remember people, that’s what this is all about. Helping our brothers and sisters in Japan. They need all that we can muster up, along with a few prayers or other loving vibes you might be able to send them.

Once these babies are ready, CDs and digital copies will be available from Amazon and through iTunes. The artwork, mastering and final details are in the works. It will only be a matter of weeks before the first compilations will be released as a digital download. Shortly afterwards, the CDs will be sold through Amazon.
